A credit score scale generally runs from 300 to 850. For someone with a score of 300, their poor credit would greatly limit their chances of obtaining a credit card or loan. A score this low can result from many factors, including negative marks on a credit report, a history of delinquent payments, or previous bankruptcies or foreclosures. With professional assistance and planning, however, even those with the lowest credit scores may be able to obtain credit.

It is possible to get credit checks in a number of ways. Credit score printout are available online for a small fee. The credit scores can be obtained from three different credit bureaus, but one has to decide on the bureau he wants to get his credit score from. Alternately, one can purchase a 3 credit score check in order to get information from each bureau. The advantage in this is that you will get credit scores higher or lower depending on the bureau and you have the freedom to use the better one for your purpose.

Yet another option of getting credit checks done is to simply apply for a new credit card or make a loan application. In case you application is denied, you can ask for the reasons behind the denial. The concerned authorities will send you a credit score report free of cost.

To check my credit score here is what I would do. I'd go to a licensed professional at a “credit counseling office”. Most cities have these and you can find them on the web on in a phone book. To get a credit evaluation make an appointment with the agent. When you go to the office take as much credit information as you have–things like bill statements, late payment and past due records.
